What Makes Some Students Excel While Others Fall Behind?

Same classroom. Same teacher. Same subjects. Yet two students walk out with entirely different marks.

There’s a division you can clearly see but cannot always explain.

One student can be on top of their assignments, always confident in class and have the energy to pursue interests outside schoolwork while the other completely struggles – having to drag their feet, continuously misses deadlines and believes they’re ‘just not for school.’

This difference can be frustrating and confusing to watch. You know your child is capable and sometimes they are even more than their peers.

We know this keeps you wondering why things aren’t falling into place.

Why do some students seem to sail through school while others struggle endlessly?

The answer is almost always the same: Engagement.

Disengagement is More Than Just ‘Not Caring’

Disengagement happens when students disconnect from learning. They lose interest, motivation and attention.

The Commissioner for Children and Young People in WA described disengagement as a ‘nuanced and multifaceted construct.’

It’s described as not necessarily a sudden event but a process that can begin with reduced participation in school and learning activities and can ultimately result in students leaving school prior to completion.

It can look different for every child. For some, it’s quiet compliance. For others, it’s skipping homework, cramming and insisting that school ‘doesn’t matter.’

Habits Before Homework

To adults, disengagement can look like laziness but students describe it differently:

  • Overwhelmed by endless assignments.
  • Unsure why their work matters.
  • Anxiety about failing so they avoid starting.

When this happens, parents usually add more tutoring hours or push extra study time to address the problem. If the issue lies in motivation, piling on work will just increase the workload for students without improving results.

The real shift happens through behavioural change. New habits and fresh mindsets that make studying feel purposeful.

At Kalibrate-Ed, we’ve seen that success is achieved when behavioural change comes first. We always make sure to look beyond marks to observe:

  • Mental wellbeing (tackling anxiety, overwhelm and self-doubt)
  • Cognitive function (building skills like memory and focus)
  • Environment (setting up systems and spaces that support learning)

Tutoring can help fill knowledge gaps but without engagement, it rarely sticks.

When Engagement Flips the Script

Staying on the sidelines costs more than we think and disengagement hurts more than bad marks.

In fact, the Parliamentary Library links school refusal to mental health struggles, falling behind and long-term risks for university and careers.

It’s not intelligence or resources that create the gap, it’s engagement.

Engaged students don’t necessarily study longer. The difference is seen in how they approach work:

  • They have a clear way to track deadlines and break tasks into steps to stay organised and avoid last-minute panic.
  • They use simple techniques to interrupt procrastination even when motivation feels low.
  • They link schoolwork to bigger goals and plans which gives them more reasons to care and take ownership.

When these habits are in place, the shift becomes obvious. Instead of fear and avoidance, students begin to take pride in their progress. Parents notice calmer routines and fewer hold-ups as a result.

The Path Forward Starts with Kalibrate-Ed

We all know that engagement does not happen overnight, but taking a step now can change their track for the following year. Term 4 is the perfect time to make some changes.

We help families close the engagement gap here at Kalibrate-Ed. We focus on behavioural and tailored strategies and guide students from ‘struggling’ to ‘thriving.’
