Term 2 — done and dusted! If it was smooth sailing for your child, brilliant and a job well done. But if they barely made it out the other side, battle-scarred and bleary-eyed? Take a breath. It’s not game over, just half-time.

By now, most families are dreaming of hot chocolate, a warm doona, and a holiday that doesn’t involve a single thought of subject selections or assessment blocks.

And yes, you absolutely deserve that rest. So does your child.

But let’s be honest — you don’t want to repeat the same stress, frustration or the how-are-we-behind-again panic in Term 3. That bitter aftertaste of burnout? Let’s not serve it up twice.

It might sound like a long shot, but you don’t need a full-blown overhaul to change your child’s academic game. Adding three simple steps to your Term 3 prep can help your child come back stronger and ready to face Semester 2 with more energy and motivation.

Here’s the kicker: No bribery, nagging, or YouTube binges disguised as “study breaks” required. Just three strategic moves that fit perfectly with your holiday plans.

1. Have a Chat About What Success Means to Them

Reframing success in your child’s terms isn’t about lowering your expectations. It’s about giving your teen a reason to care.

Over the years, we’ve seen students take quantum leaps in motivation and marks simply because they got to define what success means to them. Not Mum’s. Not Dad’s. Not the school’s.

Unfortunately, we often impose what we think academic success should look like on kids. We are deciding the finish line and judging them for failing at something they had no say in.

At some point, they’ll stop trying harder and start clocking out because they’re just chasing someone else’s version of success, not their own.

So, what parents need to do first is to let go, even just a little. We know it’s easier said than done, especially when you care so deeply. But sometimes, the most powerful way to help your child bounce back is to gently step back and give them room to take the lead. It’s going to take a lot to do—but it can make all the difference.

Your goal is to get to a concrete, tangible definition of academic success that remains consistent throughout high school. For starters, here are comfortable ways to reframe with your child:

  • Have a casual chat with your child.
  • Ask this exact prompt:
    “To be successful means…”
  • Grab a pen and paper.
  • Brainstorm for 5 minutes. No overthinking. No editing. Just write.
  • When time’s up, scan your list and highlight the statements that feel exciting, energising, or real.

From there, you’ll start to see patterns. These are your convergence points — where their values and motivations intersect with their goals.

Then, go one level deeper:
What does success mean to you — academically? What would make you feel proud in Term 3?

You’re not just hoping for good results, you’ve now got a personal mission. And it didn’t take more than 10 minutes.

2. Think Big Picture

Once you’ve worked out your definition, it’s time to co-design a strategy in broad strokes.

Yes, the key is to co-create it with them. When teens build their own strategy, they’re way more likely to follow through, self-drive their success, and keep their momentum. It’s not just another rule. It’s their plan.

Start by asking:

  • How do you know that you’ve achieved it?
  • What would need to happen for you to feel that success?
  • What could get in the way? How could we navigate that if it comes up?
3. Lock In a Term 3 Gameplan

From there, it’s a matter of working backwards to reverse-engineer their milestones, so it becomes a numbers game.

  • What subjects need more attention?
  • How many practice papers would help?
  • How many hours are needed for study, rest, and reset?

When you’ve worked out a plan based on your strategy, your child is in a better position to recalibrate when unexpected situations happen, with less emotions and more action.

Because here’s the truth: when you think about your child’s future—you know it’s not going to be a walk in the park. It’s going to be a climb, with challenges, uncertainties, and roadblocks. But not all academic journeys have to be bloody or stressful. With the right plan, your child can climb new heights in Term 3 and the years ahead without burning out.

The Real Goal? Purpose, Not Pressure

At the end of the day, the goal is not just about reaching the “ideal” grades. It’s about helping them self-drive their success and prepare them for the future. More importantly, we want to give them a reason to keep going, even when things get rough.

The earlier they find the destination they’re on board with, the stronger and steadier their journey will be—this term and beyond.
